Unit 1: Development of Children and Young People

The learning outcomes for this unit are:

1. Understand the different areas of development from birth to 19 years.
2. Understand the factors that can influence children and young people’s development.
3. Understand how the main child development theorists influence current practice.
4. Understand the importance of development norms and timeframes in recognising development and behaviour.
5. Know how to monitor children and young people’s development to determine whether the child is developing according to expected norms.

Unit 2: Professional Practice in Special Educational Needs Services

The learning outcomes for this unit are:

1. Understand the principles of special educational needs services.
2. Understand current legislation and guidelines that informs the practice of working within special educational needs services.
3. Understand how the views of children, young people and carers can be used to improve learning development and support services.
4. Understand the importance of reflective practice to inform and improve practice and development.

Unit 3: Understand How to Support Children and Young People to Achieve Learning Potential

The learning outcomes for this unit are:

1. Understand the importance of active participation of children and young people in decisions affecting their lives.
2. Understand the importance of assessment and planning for children and young people towards the achievement of positive outcomes.
3. Know how to support children or young people to recognise and deal with attitudes or behaviour that may undermine their learning opportunities.
4. Understand the importance of the provision of environments and services that promote the development of children or young people.

Unit 4: Understand How to Support Children and Young People with Speech, Language and Communication Needs

The learning outcomes for this unit are:

1. Understand the way in which behaviour, social and emotional difficulties are linked with speech, language and communication.
2. Understand the importance of early intervention to support the speech, language and communication needs of children and young people.
3. Understand how to support positive speech, language and communication development for children and young people with behaviour, emotional and social development difficulties.
4. Understand how environments support speech, language and communication.
5. Know how to work with others in order to support the speech, language and communication development of children and young people with behavioural, emotional and social development needs.

Unit 5: Understand How to Support Disabled Children and Young People and those with Specific Requirements

The learning outcomes for this unit are:

1. Understand the possible impact of disability, special requirements (additional needs) and attitudes on positive outcomes for children and young people.
2. Understand the importance of diversity, equality and inclusion in promoting positive outcomes for children and young people.
3. Understand how integrated and multi-agency working impacts on positive outcomes for children and young people.
4. Understand the legal requirements for recording, sharing and storing of information.
