Unit 1: Development of Children and Young People
The learning outcomes for this unit are:
- Understand the different areas of development from birth to 19 years.
- Understand the factors that can influence children and young people’s development.
- Understand how the main child development theorists influence current practice.
- Understand the importance of development norms and timeframes in recognising development and behaviour.
- Know how to monitor children and young people’s development to determine whether the child is developing according to expected norms.
Unit 2: Professional Practice in Special Educational Needs Services
The learning outcomes for this unit are:
- Understand the principles of special educational needs services.
- Understand current legislation and guidelines that informs the practice of working within special educational needs services.
- Understand how the views of children, young people and carers can be used to improve learning development and support services.
- Understand the importance of reflective practice to inform and improve practice and development.
Unit 3: Understand How to Support Children and Young People to Achieve Learning Potential
The learning outcomes for this unit are:
- Understand the importance of active participation of children and young people in decisions affecting their lives.
- Understand the importance of assessment and planning for children and young people towards the achievement of positive outcomes.
- Know how to support children or young people to recognise and deal with attitudes or behaviour that may undermine their learning opportunities.
- Understand the importance of the provision of environments and services that promote the development of children or young people.
Unit 4: Understand How to Support Children and Young People with Speech, Language and Communication Needs
The learning outcomes for this unit are:
- Understand the way in which behaviour, social and emotional difficulties are linked with speech, language and communication.
- Understand the importance of early intervention to support the speech, language and communication needs of children and young people.
- Understand how to support positive speech, language and communication development for children and young people with behaviour, emotional and social development difficulties.
- Understand how environments support speech, language and communication.
- Know how to work with others in order to support the speech, language and communication development of children and young people with behavioural, emotional and social development needs.
Unit 5: Understand How to Support Disabled Children and Young People and those with Specific Requirements
The learning outcomes for this unit are:
- Understand the possible impact of disability, special requirements (additional needs) and attitudes on positive outcomes for children and young people.
- Understand the importance of diversity, equality and inclusion in promoting positive outcomes for children and young people.
- Understand how integrated and multi-agency working impacts on positive outcomes for children and young people.
- Understand the legal requirements for recording, sharing and storing of information.
